The annual Food for Families campaign is kicking off once again this year. The Katy ISD Partners in Education are leading the efforts that will provide $50 grocery gift cards to Katy ISD students whom the administration identifies are in need of assistance. Last year, the Katy ISD community raised $25,000 to support families during the holidays.
The Katy ISD Education Foundation has been honored as a finalist for the 2017 Chick-fil-a True Inspiration Award. The nonprofit aims to provide educational grants to teachers in the Katy ISD district. The $75,000 award, which recognizes nonprofits that support and inspire youth, will be given to one of the four finalists. Community members are encouraged to vote before the October 17 deadline.
Over 35 Katy ISD students were awarded State Medallions at the Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE), which was held in April. VASE gives students the opportunity to have artwork created in their art classes judged by certfied judges. In addition to the 36 students who received state medallions, four students won the Gold Seal of Excellence award as well. 2016 Katy ISD Board Election early voting will be available Monday, April 25, through May 3, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will be five voting sites available: Mayde Creek High School, Cinco Ranch High School, Leonard Merrell High School, Seven Lakes School and Taylor High School. Each spring, the Katy ISD Education Foundation hosts a fundraising event in partnership with the Katy Jazz Festival called GROOVE. This fun event will feature live jazz music, great company and great food, making for an unforgettable night. But most importantly, all proceeds will go toward the Katy ISD Education Foundation. This coming week, March 7-11, is National School Breakfast Week, and the Katy ISD Nutrition and Food Service Department is celebrating. This week of celebration will include efforts to educate the student population on healthy school breakfasts and the importance of eating breakfast each morning. The slogan for the week is "Wake Up with School Breakfast," and the Nutrition and Food Service Department will be spreading the word on how healthy breakfasts can help students succeed in the classroom.
Katy ISD will be celebrating its KEYS mentors on Thursday, March 3, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at "Ties and Tiaras." The event will take place at NOAH's of Katy, and activities will be honoring the KEYS Scholarship Sponsors and the 2016 Mentors of the Year. There will also be entertainment by the Taylor High School string quartet. All proceeds from ticket sales for the event will go to the KEYS Scholarship fund, which has been awarding over $250,000 since 2006.
At the 2016 Farrington Contest and Awards, a foreign language competition, Katy ISD faced great success as 26 students in the district received awards. Over 200 Houston schools attend this annual contest, and each school can send up to three students from each language level. The competition consists of a written and oral exam of four parts: reading, listening, writing and speaking.
